Flashbacks and nightmares can wreck your life. In one veterans’ case a nightmare was causing him to choke his wife while they slept. Visual and talking therapy proved very helpful for this couple and the choking behavior stopped. It’s important to tackle flashbacks and nightmares before they become habits.

A stuck point is when you’re not able to get past a bad thing that happened to you. If you are stuck in negative patterns of bitterness, anger, anxiety, fear or depression, it’s important that that you look for help to live a better life. Talking and other therapies, (with some medication if required), can help you manage better.

Sometimes people feel they are less of a person because of a trauma they experienced. Even worse, they can’t get back to who they were and what they did before the trauma event happened. Some form of accepting the unacceptable and adapting after trauma makes it easier to come to grips with who you are. Growth in a new direction certainly helps with finding new meaning for your life.

Anxiety affects people in different ways and shows itself in the body. If anxiety is more severe then so are the physical symptoms. Severe anxiety / panic can cripple you. Helping people identify what they want to be and lessening their anxiety helps them get closer to what they want.

Not everyone is good at dealing with anger. Anger might be caused by something unexpected or something that you didn’t want to happen. Anger and Depression are cousins. The family connection is they both come from frustration.  With anger the frustration goes out, with depression the frustration goes inwards.

‘Subjective Units of Distress Scale’ (SUDS) is a test you can do at home. You can use this Scale to get a score of how distressed you feel. ‘Post Traumatic Stress Disorder’ (PTSD) is clarified by an assessment from a professional who works in the trauma area.

People usually think traumas are bad events, but sometimes traumas are good things that don’t happen, for example; life threatening neglect or carelessness. It’s important to know there are two things involved here – was it something you did or didn’t do? Questionable actions can lead to a sense of shame, guilt and regrets.

Most people believe that they can’t change how they think, feel or behave. They don’t realise that their brain can help them. You can choose what you want to change. Practice takes effort and persistence to rewire your brain for the better.

To make a new habit such as swapping from vegemite to honey, (or peanut butter), you need to make a choice then your Glial (glue) cells will help you stick to your new choice. Practicing your new habit builds a new neural pathway.

Repetition is important. Practice takes effort and persistence to rewire your brain for the better. Like maze mice we like cheese, (most of us), and we’re smarter than mice because we only need to practice a new habit 30 times to get to the cheese. Whereas mice repeat the maze up to 150 times!
